CCUSD#1 Represented at the Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Award Ceremony

As a second grader, Maggie submitted her poem "I wish" to the Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Contest and was selected as one of three winners for her age group.  As the Illinois Poet Laureate from 1970 until her passing in 2000, Gwendolyn Brooks created and continued these awards for thirty years—honoring the poems of exceptional young Illinois poets in kindergarten through the twelfth grade. The contest was revived in 2017 by Illinois Humanities and the Poerty Foundation.  This weekend winners were honored at a ceremony at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago.
